Description

MANO - Burn the weeds

The MAKANI Mano weed fin has the perfect rake to prevent weeds to stick on your fin and still remain manoeuvrable.  We worked hard on the trailing edge to give it the similar shape of a wave fin that creates looseness and manoeuvrability plus we added the cut out on the top of the box to let the fin flex while riding waves in choppy water.  The larger chord closer to the board compensates for the weed rake to give power to the fin and upwind ability. You will completely forget you have a weed fin under your feet !

Mano 23 August 13, 2011
Reviewer: Alton Ing from North Vancouver, BC Canada
Today I tested, the Mano 23cm Weed Wave Fin at Nexen/Squamish in similar conditions as earlier this week. The Mano 23 performed surprising well in SW 23 g 27 on the 2010 JP 93 Freestyle Wave with both 5.2 NorthWave (slightly overpowered) and 4.7 NorthWave (perfectly powered). The "overpowered" and "pulling high" feeling I experienced earlier this week with the 27cm JP FSW stock fin completely disappeared with the Mano 23 - PROBLEM SOLVED. Amazing upwind pointing as well as easy to bear off. Never felt excessive pulling just perfectly balanced on both 5.2 and 4.7. Best of all this fin easily curves tight turns in closely spaced 2' swell - making gybes so much fun. I still can't believe this is a weed fin that performs so well in non-weed conditions.

I'm now a Makani fan. These fins are reasonably priced but deliver high performance. All my future fins will definitely be Makani.

I'm looking forward to testing the Mano fins (both 23 and 26) in bigger swell next week in the Gorge.

MakaniFins MANO July 12, 2011
Reviewer: Jh2703 from Australia
Got my makani 26cm weed/wave fin in the mail today and I'm very happy with it's build quality. I got to take it for a quick spin in lake Illawarra this afternoon and first impressions are good. I was very underpowered on a 6.7 and 112L FSW but still managed to get on the plain and test it out. It responds very well to foot steering, I would go as far as saying it's more responsive then the stock JP fin. Upwind performance was outstanding, in marginal conditions I normally loose lots of ground trying to stay plainning, this fin just wants to scream upwind. The first time I pointed it upwind caught me off guard...Very impressed!
I didn't have enough power to test it out in the gybes but it turned well and had plenty of grip, can't wait to test it out at full speed. The 26cm feel right for the 6.7, I think I'll need a smaller one for my 6.2...anyways first impressions are good.

Mano 26 cm July 12, 2011
Reviewer: John from Kincardine, ON Canada
I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with my new Mano 26 fin.  I was recently on a windsurfing trip to the Outer Banks, mostly sailing my Fanatic Freewave 104 with a 5.8 NP Atlas sail.  I quickly found myself quite frustrated over the poor up-wind ability of my board.  The Fanatic fin provided little upwind pointing power.  After a morning of frustrating slogging up-wind, I ended up buying a Mano 26 fin in one of the Avon shops.  Wow...what a difference!  My board pointed up-wind with speed and power, without losing any of it's turning ability...I had a blast!

Cheers,

John

Mano 26 (Powerbox) February 8, 2011
Reviewer: David (C36) from Burnaby, BC Canada
I really liked this fin.  It powered up as well my 28 cm blade-weed fin and made a board I like really come alive. It was much looser than my weed-blade - close to a full-on wave fin (26 cm fin on a 110 L board).  My detailed impressions: pointed well; held while being pushed into jibes on the face of small waves; felt loose (for a large fin); could pump the fin (when exiting a jibe on the face of a wave); could dump speed while on a wave; felt way more forward under the board; launched and landed jumps well; jibed well (both tight and gradual); carried sail well (held 6.0); felt balanced (even when overpowered).  The only negative I experienced was having the fin break free when I was pinching upwind inbound underpowered. Bottom line - this fin is fun to use.  For details on conditions and board/sail used, visit these links.

I have since had a chance to use the Mano 26 with a 5.0 underpowered-powered and 6.7 powered - all on 110 litre FSW board).  This fin continues to impress.

WITH 5.0 UNDERPOWERED
I really surprised at the range the Mano 26 cm has - it was still workable even when paired with and underpowered 5.0.  It really helped get the 5.0 going, keep it going, drive upwind, and jump. It jibes VERY well. Really like that fin!

WITH 6.7 POWERED
I was pleasantly surprised by how well the Mano 26 held the 6.7 and how much more comfortable it was to drive the fin upwind (compared to a 36 cm weed-pointer) - the weed-pointer needed to be driven by feet pressure out near the rails, while the Mano liked a body position over top the board. The result was the Mano felt MUCH easier to sail (far less of a grind). I was able to drive the board upwind better with the smaller fin (and had the all the other benefits - better jibing, looser feel, etc - that you would expect from a wave oriented fin). I have been really impressed with the feel, performance and range of this fin.

I like this fin so much I often use it in non-weed conditions too!
