Rafael his parents separated when he was 8 years old. From age 8 till 10 he had a lot to get used to while having two homes. During that time he needed something that could take his mind of things. Rafael got involved in several sport activities such as tennis and soccer. After some time he lost his interest for soccer and tennis. I liked it in the beginning but after a while it felt like the same thing every time just running up and down the field.
Next up he got into skateboarding and water polo but also that didn’t continue, he pretty much got bruised trying crazy skateboard tricks. As for water polo the training became so intense and the swimming pool was always a long ride.
When Rafael turned 11 years old he received a four lesson package in windsurfing at Windsurfing Curacao from the new boyfriend of his mother who eventually became his stepfather. The windsurfing center was approximately a 15 minute bike ride away from his house. The excitement and fun got him hooked right away so after the four lessons it turned out into windsurfing once a week. After a short while he improved and got much better and started windsurfing twice a week. After 10 months he moved even closer to the windsurf spot making the 15 minutes bike ride a 3 minutes ride.
“when it was windy it took me only a few minutes to get to go windsurfing”. That same year my father bought me my own first windsurfing set and from that point on I almost went daily.
